If you’re trapped in a bedroom that looks like something out of the early 2000s, it may be time to do a little redecorating. I know it can be hard to find the time and motivation to make a change, but don’t worry – I’ve got your back.
Today, I’ll share with you my five best tips for turning your bedroom into a contemporary space. You may not think that small changes can make that much of a difference, but trust me, they really can – and if you follow these five steps, you’ll be able to do it in no time.
1. Start With a Clean Slate
If you want a clean slate in your room, you’ve got to first strip it of all your current décor.
Paint or remove the old furniture and replace it with something fresh and clean. This will help to create a space that’s much more modern, and you’ll be surprised how much lighter the room feels.
The second step is to clear out your closet and items that don’t belong in your bedroom, like clothes you haven’t worn in a year and boxes of old notebooks.
Finally, pack up your books and take them to a storage unit for now. You don’t have to decide what to do with your books right now – that’s something to tackle later. You’ll just need to clear out what you have, and what you can give away to make room for your new belongings.
2. Add a Light and Airy Feel
The easiest way to transform a room without spending a ton of money is to add some fresh white paint to your walls. This can be done on just about any wall – just look for light paint (I prefer a slightly transparent shade) and a paint roller.
Roll the paint slowly over the wall, while keeping a paper towel over the roller to prevent paint from getting on the wall and to protect the wall paint from coming off too quickly.
As you reach the wall’s outer edge, lift the paper towel and continue to roll the paint slowly, thus allowing the roller to easily glide over the wall.
Try out different shades, keeping in mind how the paint color and the color of the walls in your room contrast. For example, if your walls are a warm, natural white, you’ll want to avoid very pale shades of white.
3. Select a Relaxing Color Palette
Deciding what to paint your walls is always the most intimidating part of a room redecorating project. The good news is that it’s super simple: just find colors you like, and paint your walls whatever color you like.
Of course, I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve, and I’m going to tell you which two colors will give you the ultimate modern bedroom, no paintbrush required.
My favorite part of decorating a bedroom is choosing color schemes and paint colors. You can mix colors easily without the hassle of changing walls.
Many designers choose cool colors and mix them with grays for a high contrast look, or go light for a cozy feeling. For me, this perfect combination is black and gray.
4. Add some Modern Furniture
Whether you’re going for a new bed, sofa, armchair, or even a small side table, these small upgrades will make a huge difference in the room.
The white walls and very minimal, simple look might not be for everyone, but rest assured, there are tons of ways to make a statement with your décor and still keep the space modern.
Brighten things up with lighting — While it’s best to avoid too much sunlight during the day, make sure to invest in some light-enhancing lighting
It will brighten up the space and make it feel more open. I would always recommend buying a “ambient lighting kit” – this will transform any room into a homey, welcoming environment.
5. Accessorize with Art
The one thing that will always make a bedroom look modern is artwork. Start collecting a few pieces that you love and think are super-stylish, and you’ll see your room come alive with personality.
If you’re not an art lover, you can get even more creative with your decorating by using art to make a statement or create interesting focal points in your room.
Start by filling a photo frame with a print of an image that speaks to you. Don’t worry about choosing just one particular print – an arrangement of two or three works will work just fine.
If you love certain images, go ahead and get different prints – you could even display them together.
For the walls, just find one great piece that will provide the focal point for the room.
Don’t worry – you’re not alone! Getting a bedroom redo done can be very overwhelming, especially if you don’t know how to begin. But there are some easy steps you can take to get it done without being overwhelmed by all the details.
